Chapter Four

Lucy

“Stop right where you are, Lucy.”

I was already stopped, frozen in fact, in Maxwell Pierce’s doorway. He said some polite words to Mr. Drake, on the other end of the line, and hung up, staring at me the whole time, his piercing blue eyes pinning me, like a butterfly to a board. There was a pressure behind my eyes and a dryness in my throat so intense, it was almost painful.

He knew. He knew I’d lied to him. He knew that I’d been keeping secrets, and what was worse, that I was taking advantage of him. That I was using him.

He gestured to me with a crooked finger, and I took one step toward him, then another, drawn to him against my will, unable to disobey.

“Sit. Down.”

The edge in his voice sent a stab of fear through me, and I sat without hesitation. I twisted my hands together, my spine tingling, waiting for what he had to say. Would he yell? Would he fire me on the spot? Worse, would he call the cops?

I saw Alex chances of survival melting like an ice cube on a summer sidewalk. Mr. Pierce’s glare did not waver.

“Tell me the truth, Lucy. All of it.”

“The... the truth?”

My voice sounded high to me, childish, as if I was a girl again, pouting at my grandmother’s knee, in trouble for running my mouth off at school.

“All of it, right this minute. I need to hear it from you,” he said. “Tell me what’s really going on here.”

I looked down at my clasped hands, feeling the sting of tears behind my eyes now. How to begin?

“My brother has a history of getting in trouble. He... he’s very smart, but he makes bad decisions. Hangs out with bad people. After our parents died he just... he just drifted, you know?”

Mr. Pierce nodded, although I wondered if he had any clue how hard life could be for a kid like Alex. If he could empathize even if he wanted to.

“Go on.”

“When we first met over dinner at Isabeau and Chase’s place, I was there because I needed money. Alex was arrested for stealing cars...”

I paused, suddenly realizing where I was. In the office of the CEO of a gigantic car company, in the presence of a car lover, racer... collector. Was a car thief the equivalent of a serial killer to someone like Maxwell Pierce?

My boss’ face remained impassive. I cleared my throat and continued.

“The man he was stealing for is some evil bastard named Dmitry. He says Alex still owes him the price of the car he stole, or something will happen to him... And now, because I couldn’t pay fast enough, something just did.”

A tear rolled down my cheek, and I swiped it away, sitting a little straighter.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I didn’t want you to pay for my ticket, but you wouldn’t just let me go...”

“Lucy.”

“I wanted to take care of this without getting anyone involved...”

“Lucy...”

“This isn’t anyone else’s battle. I needed to
